A total of four Lancer seniors have signed to play college softball. Catcher, Savannah Bellem, will be playing for the Baker University Wildcats next year. Bellem was a second team All Sunflower League selection in 2013. Shortstop, Maty Gray, will be playing for the McPherson Bulldogs. Her sister Amanda also played for the Bulldogs in 2008 and 2009. Outfielder, Erin McGinley, will be joining her sister Shannon at the University of Kansas next season. She was named First Team All Sunflower League and First Team All Metro in 2013. Senior pitcher, Rowan Turner has chosen to play softball at the next level for Smith College in Northhampton, MA. Turner was named First Team All Sunflower League in 2013 and was selected as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Player of the Week for the region.
A great effort by Savannah Bellem spurred the Lancers to a 22-0 win in four innings on Tuesday against a struggling Leavenworth team.
Bellem rocked Leavenworth with two home runs, went 3-3 in the game with four RBIs and four runs scored. The homers came in the second and fourth innings.
Rowan Turner shut down Leavenworth while she was in the circle. Leavenworth managed just one hit off of Turner, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two during her four innings of work.
Game two of the double-header exhibited a similar outcome as the Lancers took that contest 15-1. A two-run single by Shelby Harvey, an RBI single by Hannah Nick, a two-run single by Corey Kirkpatrick, and an RBI double by Anna Cook in the first inning put the Lancers up by six. Then an RBI double by Turner and an RBI single by Harvey in the second helped the Lancers to an eight run lead. Erin McGinley had three extra base hits for East. She doubled in the third inning and tripled in the first and fourth innings. Harvey was on the mound for SME and allowed just one run on four hits.
The Lancers are back to even at 3-3 for the season. They are scheduled to face Olathe East Thursday, April 17 at home in a double-header at 4:15 and 6 p.m. The Hawks are the reigning state champs so it looks to be a tough match-up for the Lancers.
The Lancers are off to a bit of a slow start this year after dropping two games to Olathe South and splitting with Lawrence last Saturday. They hope to have more success this week as they travel to Leavenworth Tuesday to face the Pioneers in a double-header. They will then turn around and face an always tough Olathe East program at home this Thursday, April 17. Games begin at 4:15 and 6 p.m.
The Lancers had some big at bats on Saturday with Savannah Bellem ripping a three run triple in the 6th inning of Game #1 to give the Lancers a comfortable 7-1 lead and then scored herself on a passed ball. Rowan Turner dominated on the mound with seven K's in that game. An RBI double by Hannah Nick and Rowan Turner, as well as a home run by Erin McGinley was not enough to get over the five runs that Lawrence was able to score including three in the first inning.
The Lancers look to improve their offense with timely hitting this week, after leaving 9 runners on base in the 5-3 loss to Lawrence.
